The Environmental Health Office deals with food, drinking water, lodging, public swimming pools, residential and commercial wastewater treatment, solid waste coordination, housing inspections, epidemiology, and injury prevention related activities.

Where do I take my Solid Waste?
Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe own and operate three solid waste disposal/recycling transfer stations located within the Cass County portion of the Leech Lake Reservation. Transfer stations are located in the communities of Cass Lake, Bena, and Onigum. Acceptable items include household garbage, mixed solid wastes (furniture, plastic toys, etc.), tires, white goods (appliances including refrigerators, washers, dryers, hot water heaters, etc.), and scrap metal (car parts, etc.). Acceptable recyclable items include newspaper, office paper, magazines, corrugated cardboard, #1 and #2 plastic containers, tin and aluminum cans, glass, used motor oil, and vehicle batteries. Household hazardous wastes (paints, stains, pesticides, etc.) are also accepted, but only at the Cass Lake site. Leech Lake Band Members must have enrollment card to access sites. Non-Leech Lake Band Members must have solid waste card (cards can purchase from Cass Lake City Hall, Teals, Clem's Hardware) to access Cass Lake Transfer Station only.

Where can I get my water tested?
The Minnesota Chippewa Tribe Water Quality Laboratory can perform bacteriological and basic water chemistry analysis for a nominal fee. Payment must be coordinated with MCT Lab (335-6303) prior to Leech Lake Environmental Health Office obtaining samples in accordance with protocols for analysis.

Leech Lake Reservation Office of Environmental Health operates a child restraint seat program, making seats available to Leech Lake Band Members at affordable costs. Call 335-4532 for details.
