The Legal Department's mission is to provide legal representatin, support and advice in connection with tribal government administration, program development and tribal business for Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe.

servicesAnishinaabe Legal Services (ALS) is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization that was created in 1967, using funds from the Federal Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO). At that time, ALS was known as the Leech Lake Reservation Legal Services Project, and was the first independent Native American legal services office in the country. In 1974, Congress created the Federal Legal Services Corporation (LSC), and the Leech Lake Services Project began receiving its annual Native American grant from LSC.

Regional Native Public Defense Corporation
Regional Native Public Defense Corporation is a separate corporation funded through MN State Baord of Public Defense and Partially funded by the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe and the White Earth Reservation. Defendants (Leech Lake and White Earth enrollees) that qualify through the county court are then appointed a court appointed attorney with the Regional Native Public Defense Corporation (RNPDC).
RNPDC handles criminal cases only, such as petty misdemeanor, gross misdemeanor, and felony cases. RNPDC attorneys cover seven counties; Cass, Beltrami, Itasca, Mahnomen, Becker, Clearwater, and Hubbard.
