Types of Foster Care

The Leech Lake Child Welfare Foster Care Program is created to accommodate all children. Foster care applicants who wish to provide regular care will only need basic requirements whereas, parents who wish to provide care for children with special needs will need prior training in specific areas.

Category Definitions:

Regular Foster Care

Regular Foster Care home provide a safe environment in a family setting for children of all ages who requirre care for a period of time that may range from days to months.

Relative Foster Care

Relative Foster Care homes are the same as a regular home but is only for relatives of the foster care provider.

Emergency Foster Care

Emergency Foster Care is for children needing an out-of-home placement for at least 72 hours. This type of care is short-term and can include children who have no significant needs, children who are in need of medical care or children who have behaviors that are challenging to manage.

Therapeutic Foster Care

Therapeutic Foster Care is a licensed foster care home designated to provide integrated treatment services that are provided to children with severe emotional disturbance, serious medical conditions, developmental disabilites or serious behavior problems including, but not limited to, criminal sexual conduct, criminal assault, or substance abuse.

Medically Fragile Foster Care

Medically Fragile Foster Care is for infants who have medical needs. Medically fragile infants commonly have special medical and feeding needs, which require less than hospitalization but more than regular daily care. Training in the use of medical equipment, feeding and nutrition and some life saving procedures are required to provide this type of care. There must be a foster parent available around the clock.

Respite Foster Care

Respite Foster Care is substitute care available for foster care providers. Each foster car family can use up to 11 days of respite care in each calendar year. This type of care is typically short-term, from one to three days at at time. Respite care can be used by foster care providers for short periods in a day or for over night care.
