Winter Safety Checklist for Families and Children Home Heating Tips

We are working on a plan to address natural hazards in our area and thanks to the community input, we identified seven new hazard mitigation projects to work on and make our communities more prepared in an emergency. The seven areas are:

  1. Obtain backup generators for our water systems.
  2. Reducing fuel loading in the 2012 blowdown areas.
  3. Review fire restriction polices to reduce wildfire hazards.
  4. Develop a protocol for communicating wildfire hazards.
  5. Research creating community shelters that can provide food, water, heat and AC for all manner of hazards
  6. Extreme Cold Emergencies, better information to the public about heating assistance programs, especially for low income households, encourage non-electricity dependent alternate heating systems in homes.
  7. Compile a list of vulnerable adults and elders and ensure that they are taken care of during periods of inclement weather.

We also had some productive feedback in regards to Law Enforcement and EMS, here are the projects we will strive to develop;

  • Leech Lake Tribal Police will develop a simple community watch program and encourage intra-community responsibility and cooperation with Law Enforcement to make our communities a safe place for our families;
  • Leech Lake EMS will continue efforts to train community members in CPR and 1st aid, offer free Community Emergency Response Team training to all that wish to participate, this will make our communities more resilient and equipped to respond until more help can arrive, this is critical in our more rural communities. We recently received a $1000 dollar grant from the Enbridge Community Investment Program to help equip future community emergency response team members.

Other Projects:

Repairing and testing our LLBO owned Emergency Alert Sirens, there are 12 located in: Tract 33, Veterans Grounds, Mission Community Center, Pennington Community Center, Prescott, Northern Lights, Onigum, Boy River, Sugar Point, Bena, Ball Club, and Inger. We are also looking at purchasing and equipping two more communities with Emergency Alert Sirens.

We have been meeting and training with Enbridge to make our First Responders, Firemen, Law Enforcement, Department of Resource Management, and EMS more informed on what to do if there is a pipeline incident.

We have been participating in Cass County Mass Care and Emergency Sheltering exercises to improve collaboration and communication with the entities that work within the bounds of our reservation.
