Patricia Bittner, Methamphetamine Community Policing Coordinator, Contributes to a Newly Published Book

Our very own Patty Bittner is working hard to fight the war on drugs. Last year Patty created a billboard to help her cause. The billboard Don’t Meth with Me, I’m Drug Free! is located in Cass Lake on Highway 2. After seeing the billboard, book author Sheri Mabry Bestor asked Patty if she could use the billboard in her new book Substance Abuse: The Ultimate Teen Guide (It Happened to Me), Published by Scarecrow Press (July 11, 2013).

The following is Patty’s contribution to the book.

A Sister

Hello,

I am Patricia Bittner, the Methamphetamine Community Policing Coordinator, for the Leech Lake Tribal Police Department on the Leech Lake Reservation.

In this position I go into the schools and communities to educate the young and old about the harmful effects that Methamphetamine use has on people. I have been doing this for the past year now and because I have educated our young people about meth I wanted to come up with a slogan that was catchy and on the lighter side. So I came up with, “Don’t Meth with Me, I’m Drug Free!”

10% of the people who try alcohol for the FIRST time will become addicted.

98% of people who try Methamphetamines for the FIRST time will become addicted.

This highly addictive drug will have you; sprung, thirsty, fiending, spun, all doped, and snaked, after you tried just ONCE!

When you live the drug life you will be beaten, raped, shot, stabbed, go to jail/prison, and death will slowly sneak up on you. I know this because my baby sister and her husband had all the monkeys on their backs. The pipes/needles were calling their names, and the devil was knocking at their door.

In October 2006 the devil succeeded and took them away from us. We buried my baby sister in the cemetery by my house. Every day that I drive by her grave makes me want to fight the war on drugs a lot harder than the day before.

My message to all the young people in this world is: you will be our future leaders running this country, we are counting on you, so make us proud and, “Don’t Meth around with drugs!”

Don’t ever forget you are loved and wanted by many!

Sincerely,
Patricia Bittner
